A Hero's Journey

Three books titled Book the First, the Second Book, and the Final Book tell the coming of age story of a young hero being mentored by Epoch, a wise old man who holds a secret. The books seem to refuse to tell you the story in the proper order, but seem to randomly offer up chapters out of order.

Editor's Note:

These missions are given out randomly for each character. They are listed in order here for ease of reference.

Book the First: Chapter 1

Mission Briefing

(The first book of Trilogy opens to a random page) Character was simple folk, leading a simple life. He / She worked on a farm with their family their entire life. They knew nothing outside the valley they grew up in, occasionally a salesman would come to town with stories of the big cities and their super powered beings saving the day or causing havoc. Character harbored a secret. He / She had powers too, but there was really no good use for them out here in the valley. So Character continued to toil about the farm, secretly wanted to be a character in the stories told by those salesmen, but here in the valley no day ever needed to be saved.

Debriefing

Dealing with the invading robots, Character stood perplexed. Why had they come to the valley? What were they after? And who was going to clean up the fields now that there were robot parts all over them?! Character hoped it wouldn't be him / her.

Book the First: Chapter 14

Mission Briefing

(The first book of Trilogy opens to a random page) Character found himself / herself at the entrance of the warehouse on the outskirts of town. This was the last step in their long chain of events to determine who was behind the robot attacks on the valley that seemed to happen more and more often ever since that first fateful day. Character's powers had come in very handy for self defense, but now he / she was in the hornet's nest.

That old man was here, too. Character saw him being dragged in here by a couple of robots. Could the old man have been the one that sent the email that connected the dots between all the clues Character had gathered? Character suspected as much and wanted to be certain.

Old Man
Briefing

The old man gathered his wits and spoke, 'Hello, there. You're Character aren't you? My name is Epoch, and I've been wondering when our paths would finally meet. My frail body is happy that today was such day!'

  • 'I am Character and I am here to rescue you.'
Epoch spoke, 'And for the rescue, I thank you. Now, what do you know about these robots?'
  • He / She recited the story of how they came to her farm one afternoon.
Epoch said, 'Much as I have gathered as well. I can tell that your timely rescue was born of the information I left you on the location of this place. Now, with that taken care of, shall we get down to business?'
  • Finally he / she had an ally in the fight against the robots.
  • He / She said, 'Not much. I never would have found this place without this message I received.'
Epoch smiled. 'You're welcome for that,' and he took a deep bow. Now, shall we take care of business?'
  • Finally he / she had an ally in the fight against the robots.
  • He / She stood proudly over the defeated enemies,'You OK, old man?'
Epoch answered, 'I am more than alright, Character. Now that you are here anyway.'
  • 'How do you know me?' he / she asked.
Epoch smiled 'Of course I do. Who do you think gave you the information you needed to find this place? Now, shall we take care of the business at hand?'
  • Finally he / she had an ally in the fight against the robots.
  • 'You know who I am?' he / she asked.
+++ Missing Information +++
  • He / She looked bewildered, was the old man following him / her?
Epoch spoke before Character could, 'Yes, I have been following your efforts. I see you got my message that betrayed the location of this lab. Now, shall we take care of business?'
Finally he / she had an ally in the fight against the robots.

Debriefing

Character and Epoch escaped the warehouse with their lives. Epoch's knowledge of the situation would prove to be quite valuable in the future. Epoch and Character frantically discussed their next move.

Book the First: Chapter 22

Mission Briefing

(The first book of Trilogy opens to a random page) Character and Epoch made their way through the lab. They knew that the leader of the robots was overseeing the last part of this operation personally and they could strike a great blow if they could take him out. The robots had succeeded in planting their devices all over the valley, there was no denying that. It was just down to Character and Epoch to stop them from being activated.

Their investigation had told them there were four computers that needed to be shut down in order to prevent catastrophy from befalling the valley. Using equal parts force and stealth, Epoch and Character make their way into the labs where the controls lie.

Briefing

Epoch steeled himself. 'We must be ready for anything. Those robots are being controlled by someone, and I am afraid to be right if it is who I think it is,' he said. Character knew better than to press the issue, so he / she let him continue, 'Any questions before we go in?'

  • He / She looked concerned. 'Are you going to be OK?' he / she asked.'
'Bah!' exclaimed Epoch. 'I can take care of myself, now let's go over the plan one last time.'
  • He / She listened intently.
'There are four computers in there,' began Epoch. 'We need to shut down each one and that will disable the devices set up around the valley. We can't leave even one of them running or we will fail at the task that has been handed to us.' He continued, 'If we run into the leader of the robots, we should do our best to take him down. He may be the key to everything.'

Personnel File

Character and Epoch poured over the data. 'Infinity,' said Character. 'He runs this whole operation.'

Epoch wanted to say something, but held his tongue. Character assumed that he was the one defeated earlier.

Debriefing

Character and Epoch made their way to the surface, content in knowing that the valley would be at peace again. In the back of their minds they knew that Infinity's escape meant that their days of respite were numbered, and one day, perhaps one day soon, they would be tasked with saving the day again. Character looked forward to that day, he / she had grown much in his / her adventures with Epoch. Epoch was an excellent mentor, and Character hoped they could fight alongside one another forever.

The End(?)

The Second Book: Chapter 2

Mission Briefing

(The second book of Trilogy opens to a random page) Character and Epoch were stunned that the robots would strike back so soon. It was a small force, easily handled, but they had just saved the valley only a week ago. Where were these robots coming from? The big city? It seemed like a good place to start.

  • Turn to the next page of chapter 2 in the second book.

As Character and Epoch made their way into the big city, they realized that there were no people around, only robots milling about. What happened here? Where did the people go. They needed answers and they needed them fast, but had no one to ask. Character was about to speak when they heard a man's voice bellow out over on another block. Epoch and Character bolted off in the direction of sounds, in search of more answers.

    • Talk to Mercenary

Mercenary was grateful for the rescue, and it seemed the duo of Character and Epoch just became a trio, as they added a new ally.

Epoch
Briefing

'It was quite a shock to see those robots strike back so soon,' said Epoch. 'If we act quickly we should be able to stop them with less effort this time.'

  • He / She agreed, but in he / she mind they knew it couldn't be that easy.
Epoch could tell that Character had reservations. He would have to discuss the matter further when things were calmer.
  • He / She said, 'I am kind of getting addicted to the excitement.'
Epoch frowned at Character. 'One should not crave danger and excitement. You may get what you wished for, but in spades.'

  • 'That was us,' he / she said proudly. It was weird to be recognized.
'I am Character, and my mentor here is Epoch. What was your name?'
'It's an honor to meet you, sir / ma'am,' said the stranger as he extended a hand in thanks. 'You too, Mr. Epoch,' and he shook that hand as well. 'Folks call me Mercenary. I am usually a gun for hire, but taking out these robots is a job I do for free.'

Clue
Mercenary's Story

The cowboy known as Mercenary seemed to have as big a grudge against the robots as Character and Epoch. He would be a great asset to the duo in the coming days.

Debriefing

And so Character and Epoch were joined by the rough-around-the-edges Mercenary. Mercenary's reasons for joining them seemed obvious, but in reality he was holding back a key piece of information. One that could possibly be the key to destroying Infinity and the robots once and for all.

The Second Book: Chapter 21

Mission Briefing

(The second book of Trilogy opens to a random page) Mercenary caught his breath. That last battle had exhausted him but now he needed to regain his strength for the upcoming battle. Character soldiered on, his / her injuries not limiting them in any way. Epoch had uncovered this lab where the robots were assembling the Fractien Super Weapon using the cypher uncovered by Mercenary two weeks prior. It was very fortunate that the robots hadn't changed their cyphers or the trio would have never uncovered this place.

  • Turn to the next page of chapter 21 in the second book

They climbed through smelly sewers and cramped ventillation units until their knees were raw and the sweat poured from their brows. Mercenary cracked wise at one point, pulling out a lighter and imitating an action hero. 'Come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs.' Character chuckled at the reference, where Epoch just shhh'ed them both. They were on a clandestine mission, after all. They knew that the main component to the Fractien was in this lab, as was the Fractien's inventor who would need to be defeated if they hoped to prevent the Fractien from simply being rebuilt.

  • Destroy the Fractien and defeat the inventor
    • Defeat the Fractien's creator
    • Destroy the Fractien
    • Talk to Epoch or Mercenary

The Fractien destroyed, the trio now had more things to worry about. Namely, getting out of this place alive.

Briefing

The trio prepared themselves for the battles ahead.

'With all three of us, this should be a breeze,' said Mercenary.

'Your cockiness will be your undoing,' replied Epoch.

'If anyone's not making it out of here, it will be you, old man,' Mercenary said in jest, yet his words rang in Character's head as frighteningly prophetic.

'Let's get that inventor and her insane machine,' said Mercenary, and the trio was off.

Debriefing

The Fractien was destroyed, and it's inventor was put out of commission. She wouldn't be repeating that performance. Character, Epoch, and Mercenary now needed to escape to the surface. A booming voice came on over the intercom, it was that of Infinity. 'MEDDLESOME FOOLS!' he bellowed. 'You think you can destroy my weapon and then live? I will deal with you all PERSONALLY!'

The Second Book: Chapter 24

Mission Briefing

(The second book of Trilogy opens to a random page) Mercenary turned to Character and spoke, 'That old man is going to get us all killed, but he's our best hope for getting out of here alive.' It was true. Epoch had left Mercenary and Character on their own while he went to distract Infinity. It was a bold plan, but Character didn't understand how Epoch could face Infinity alone and live.

'The exit,' said Mercenary. 'we need to get to it, NOW. Hopefully Epoch will meet us there, but I am just not sure how that's supposed to happen.' Character was worried but tried not to show it. After all he / she and Epoch had been through, he / she wasn't sure how he'd be able to go on without him as a mentor. He / She put those thoughts out of his / her head and concentrated on just one thing: Escape.

Infinity: Do you see, Epoch? You cannot hope to best me, not now, not ever.
Epoch: I did not come here to best you, Infinity, I came here to stall you.
Epoch: And in that, I have been succesful.
Infinity: Stall me? Hah! That's the best that you can do, isn't it? Stall your inevitable destruction?
Epoch: All men must face their doom one day, Infinity. I face mine with a smile. How will you face yours?
Infinity: With a rifle.

Debriefing

Epoch was dead. Character steeled himself / herself for this moment but he / she wasn't sure where to go now. Infinity was still out there, and even though he / she had Mercenary at his / her side, he / she wasn't sure it would be enough. He / She did revel in the joy that the superweapon was permanently destroyed, and so there would be some respite coming, but considering how quickly Infinity struck back after their last major victory, Character knew that there would be little in the way of respite.

The Final Book: Chapter 7

Mission Briefing

(The third book of Trilogy opens to a random page) Character was beginning to miss Mercenary's company, even as gruff as he was. He / She missed the jokes, the constant movie references, but he / she knew that Mercenary had some things to deal with that were best dealt with on his own. Mercenary promised to be back and soon, but that didn't make the separation any easier. Character's thoughts turned to Epoch as he / she ventured on the road back to the valley. Epoch had taught him / her many things, but dealing with loss would be the final lesson he would teach.

  • Turn the page of chapter 7 in the final book.

Character's eyes never looked up from the road he / she tread upon back to the valley. His / Her first indication of any trouble was the scent of burning wood. He / She lifted his / her eyes to see columns of smoke rising up from his childhood home. His / Her first thought was not his own homestead, but Epoch's home on the hill. He / She noted it was fully engulfed in flames. Whatever secrets it held were being lost to the fire. He / She saw some robots located just outside the house. If Infinity was after anything of value, these robots would likely still be carrying it.

Clue
The Book of Old

This book seems to be ancient. The text is unreadable, in a language that Character couldn't understand. The cover was held on by the barest of threads. Either it was well read of the robots were not very careful in extracting it.

Debriefing

With the valley in flames, Character was shaken into action. He / She now possessed the book that the robots were taking from Epoch's home, but reading it was something else entirely. What secrets lie within? Why would Infinity want this tome? All of these questions and more raced through Character's head, and little did he / she realize that the answers were soon to come.

The Final Book: Chapter 16

Mission Briefing

(The third book of Trilogy opens to a random page) Character was stunned. He / She hadn't shown the old book to Mercenary for quite some time as he / she figured he'd have nothing further to offer from it, but nothing could have been further from the truth. Mercenary could actually read the book, understood its words completely and fluently. Mercenary's mother hailed from the foreign land where the language originated, and although it had been many years since he laid eyes upon the language, it came back to him like a rushing river of memories.

'It's a diary,' said Mercenary. 'Epoch's personal one it seems. A journal of him growing up. And here... oh,' Mercenary grew silent. He read to himself, even though Character pressed him for what he was reading. 'If this is right, the warehouse in town should have the information you need to see,' Mercenary muttered. 'Something you need to see. Let's go before the robots destroy the evidence you need.' Evidence? Information? Character was confused and lost, but he / she trusted Mercenary so he / she went along. The answers would be coming soon.

Debriefing

Mercenary looked Character straight in the eyes. 'That brother, in those photos you recovered... according to Epoch's journal here, that's Infinity. The leader of the robots and the person responsible for all of this mess. I think it's time you and I put an end to all of this. You with me?' he asked. Character knew what must be done. Mission Briefing

(The third book of Trilogy opens to a random page) Character wished Mercenary was at his / her side, but he was busy with his own problems right now.
