The windows in City of Heroes can usually be opened, closed, or re-sized (i.e. scaled) using three slash commands: {{slashcommand|window_show}}, {{slashcommand|window_hide}}, and {{slashcommand|window_scale}}. Some windows have  other slash commands dedicated to opening only that specific window. Other windows can not be opened by any slash command, can not be closed, and/or can not be scaled. Before attempting to scale individual windows, make sure to detach the particular window from its parent window by de-selecting the tiny blue radial button in the corner of the window. The size of some windows are linked to the size of another window, such as the Status window or the Chat window, and can not be scaled individually. These linked windows have been noted below using asterisks (*).

Most window names were first made available to players in [[Patch Notes/2008-05-20|Issue 12 (2008)]], as well as the commands to configure them. A command called {{slashcommand|window_names}} was created to output a list of all window names intended to be used by players with slash commands or binds. The command can still be used today, but the list is sadly incomplete and contains inaccuracies. A complete list of window names originally intended for the player can be found in the windows configuration file ''wdw.txt'' located in the game's default folder (see {{slashcommand|wdw_save}}).

Of course, these are not the only windows or window names in the game. Many windows are controlled by the game system and are inaccessible to the player. However, some windows not in the WDW.txt windows configuration file can nonetheless be accessed. These window names have been listed in their own section below. Also, the functions of many of the additional window names are simply not known (at least at this time).

Overview

Windows are an integral element of any Graphical User Interface (GUI) and respond to events from the user or the operating system. They typically consist of a rectangular frame with a title bar, and other standard UI elements inside it such as text, images, buttons, edit boxes, dialog boxes, menus, etc. They can be any size, and can be visible or invisible. Usually, each window has a specific purpose such as a window for chat messaging, or a window for powers, etc.

The windows in City of Heroes can usually be opened, closed, or re-sized (i.e. scaled) using three slash commands: /window_show, /window_hide, and /window_scale. Some windows have other slash commands dedicated to opening only those specific windows.

Most window names were first made available to players in Issue 12 (2008), as well as the commands to configure them. A command called /window_names was created to output a list of all window names intended to be used by players with slash commands or binds. The command can still be used today, but the list is sadly incomplete and contains inaccuracies. A complete list of window names intended for the player can be found in the windows configuration file wdw.txt located in the game's default folder (see /wdw_save).

Lastly, Homecoming has made many window names obsolete or inappropriate to use. For example, any window name dealing with the Paragon Market has been disabled since the Paragon Market no longer exists. This also includes windows related to supergroup prestige, ranking, veteran loyalty programs, SG raids, and other windows whose function has either been altered or no longer exists.

The following is a complete list of all known window names taken from the game configuration files as they were just before City of Heroes officially closed down in November 2012. Window names added by Homecoming, if known, are also included.
