Overview

Eastgate Journal is a tip contact that offers Tour Guide Missions in The Hollows.

Introduction

Wincott's Ally

Exploration Mission

These old publications are quite valuable finds here within the area once known as Eastgate. Shortly after the Hollowing they stopped being printed, so the information within has a lot of archival value as well as highlighting local history and points of interest.

Worthwhile knowledge could be yours by understanding the chain of events that lead to this place becoming 'The Hollows'.

  • Discover the history of the Hollows.
  • Revisit the past later.

Too Busy

"Those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to take on too many jobs at once." Perhaps that is not how the quote went, but you decide to work on your current tasks anyway.

No More Missions

You have reviewed every published article that the Eastgate Journal had to offer pertaining to relevant info on the current state of The Hollows. Now you are feeling confident in the understanding of its history.

Missions

Parapsychologist

Briefing

There's a bounty from a parapsychology researcher in the back of this journal seeking information on Circle of Thorn activities in their southern lair. Given the date on the issue, you imagine this payout was never collected after the Hollowing threw the entire area into disarray.

While you doubt there is any money on the line now, you decide that knowing what those Oranbegans are up to is worth your time.

  • Practice being a Parapsychologist.

Just for fun, you try calling the number that was listed alongside the bounty. Unfortunately, it looks like it is no longer in service. That isn't a problem, for this endeavor the potential for discovery was always the true reward.

Though you wouldn't have said no to a cash prize...

Mission Objective

  • Infiltrate Circle of Thorns territory

These hills are home to some of the Circle's most secret rites. Very few are allowed to leave after venturing here.

Seeker of Monsters

Briefing

This issue is one of the few that were published post-Hollowing. It has an article that was exploring a journalistic view into the social dynamics of the Troll gang. Seems like the only worthwhile discovery was regarding the group's hierarchy and an interesting tidbit on where Grendel's Gulch got its name.

Related is a documented spot where a momentous Troll battle took place. You start heading in that direction while continuing to read the article.

  • Become a Seeker of Monsters.

They have an excerpt from a local Troll that actually commented:
"Big trolls 'Atta' and Grendel have battle. Me much nervous when watch. At end, Atta have winning. Grendel was biggest troll, very big, claimed all of land. But no more, Atta now biggest troll, such strong none dare challenge."

Mission Objective

  • Learn of Grendel's Gulch namesake

Grendel's Gulch was named after the Trolls former leader, Grendel, who was defeated by Atta in a contest of strength on this spot.

Geologist

Briefing

You cannot even read the publication date on this journal, it's in that bad of shape. Crushed, burned, and with little bits of white pumice stuck in between the pages, it takes no imagination to deduce the culprits responsible.

While it is known that the occurrence of the Hollowing heralded the earliest sightings of the Pumicite creatures, their exact origins are still under heavy debate. Time to go dig-up where they first made their debut.

  • Fancy yourself a Geologist.

If your understanding of the Hollowing is accurate, you cannot imagine how explosive detonations within a cave network could have resulted in the birth of the sentient Pumicites.

You discard that theory... there must be some other, more ancient, explanation for them.

Mission Objective

  • Locate the epicenter of the Hollowing

This spot marks the first sighting of the strange, rock-like creatures known as Pumicites.

Backwoodsman

Briefing

There is a forestry study paper published regarding unusually rapid forest growths that had been seen every now and again in Eastgate. The research was able to determine without a doubt that the Devouring Earth were (thankfully) not responsible.

Ruling that out, the hypothesis is now on magical influence, but at the time of writing MAGI had yet to conduct a formal investigation, and given local circumstances, likely never will. You suppose that in their stead you can go on a nature walk.

  • Explore being a Backwoodsman.

While the Circle of Thorns involvement is likely, given their proximity, many would be curious what reason they'd have to expedite the expansion of the local forests.

You are aware of something called The Thorn Tree located in the Rogue Isles. Maybe the local greenery affects more than expected in the context of the Oranbegans' spell weaving?

Mission Objective

  • Tour recent forest growth

These woods have cropped up at an alarming rate since the Hollowing. Many believe the dramatic growth rate of the trees is due to the area being saturated with mystical residue from the Circle's spells.

Gangland Fury

Briefing

An article has an old posting by the Paragon Police Department regarding the escalation of gang-related violence in the northeastern Eastgate community. This publication pre-dates the Hollowing.

With the financial prospects of the area now thoroughly wrung out, are there are still gangs fighting over territory? With a quick patrol of 'Four Seasons', you should be able answer that.

  • Stem the Gangland Fury.

Unfortunately, you imagine the answer is probably yes. Gangs are rarely that particular on whether the territory they are fighting over is of any real value or not.

Oftentimes it is more about the violence itself than anything rational, those conflicts being the most difficult fires to extinguish.

Mission Objective

  • Evaluate current Four Seasons affairs

Since the Hollowing, these streets have turned into a war zone between the Trolls and the Outcasts. Only the constant vigilance of heroes keeps this conflict from turning into a bloodbath.

Graffiti Communicator

Briefing

Flipping through a few pages of the journal, it has been thoroughly used for graffiti practice. It holds more value as an artistic exhibition piece now, rather than an informational publication.

Despite this, you notice several of the compositions reference the glory of the "graffiti outpost". You look around and it seems there is some kind of navigational system hidden within the local graffiti; you start trying to find where this outpost is located.

  • Try being a Graffiti Communicator.

It is actually extremely impressive with the subtlety involved in hiding usable information within these seemingly aimless graffiti compositions.

Perhaps many have underestimated the crafty ingenuity of the gangs and their artists.

Mission Objective

  • Track down graffiti laden outpost

Longbow works side by side with the Legacy Chain to maintain this small outpost in the Hollows, using it to relay the activities of the Circle of Thorns in the nearby area. They have run into ongoing issues with the various gangs in the Hollows spray-painting the building with their logos.

Circle Seeker

Briefing

There is an interesting piece written regarding the various Oranbegan structures found to the south. Conjecture abounds as, unfortunately, the Circle of Thorns are none too accommodating in permitting anyone to get close enough to actually conduct an investigation.

While an archaeological professor cannot handle these mages, a Corruptor like you certainly can. Perhaps you will go do some exploring and see what those ominous ruins are about.

  • Go forth as a Circle Seeker.

One cannot imagine these are being utilized for anything benign, maybe they are hijacking satellite TV channels?

Would the Circle of Thorns even watch television? You wonder what shows they would tune into... Maybe one of those new high fantasy series that are all the rage.

Mission Objective

  • Seek Oranbegan structures

The Legacy Chain have been seeking the purpose of these strange structures that have been created by the Circle. They have been working together with their Rogue Isles branch, who are investigating similar structures in Cap au Diable. Some theorize they're teleporters, while others suggest they're beacons for powerful demons in the underworld.

Ironic

Briefing

This issue of the journal has a section regarding the economic growth in the residential sector of Eastgate. In the headlines is a name: Pinnacle Apartments. They were the most illustrious apartments in the area, with lavish accommodations and in the best locations.

Things seem to have taken a turn for the worse, you doubt there are very many of their buildings left standing. Actually, you seem to recall that name being on a billboard near Cherry Hills. You decide to go double-check your memory.

  • See Ironic pinnacle

The real estate market seems to be one of the most lucrative in Paragon City, but also potentially the most ruinous.

Given how frequent disasters and mishaps have been historically, it is a booming industry both figuratively and literally.

Mission Objective

  • Visit ironic billboard

The Pinnacle Apartments were some of the most sought after apartments in Eastgate, until the Hollowing. Now all that's left to remember them is this billboard. Some say it's ironic that it would be the last thing still standing.
