Impervium is certainly not brittle. It is heavier than your average metal, which is why the Impervium weapons are designed with the notches. Same basic principle as a fuller. Remove some of the metal, bringing the overall weight of the weapon down and improve the balance. Impervium is so strong that it can still maintain it's integrity even with long strips taken out of it.
